3 Reasons Ear Protection Is Important

3 Reasons Ear Protection Is Important

Did you know that hearing loss is far more common than you might think with one in ten Americans suffering from hearing problems? That’s a scary statistic, isn’t it? While a high percentage of this figure results from old age and diseases that impact hearing, a percentage of this statistic is related to exposure to overly loud noises.

What’s sad about this is that many cases of hearing problems are entirely preventable if people chose to protect their ears. Still not convinced that using ear protection is essential? Here are three reasons why ear protection really is necessary.

1. Hearing Is Fragile

The fact is that hearing is fragile - the inner ear is an amazing system but also an extremely fragile one. Over time, as you get older, your hearing will begin to decline in performance, just like your eyesight will most probably also get worse - this is a change that’s to be expected. However, if you damage your hearing when in your younger years when old age hits and your hearing declines in quality, you may struggle to hear at all.

2. Tinnitus Can Drive You Mad

Tinnitus is a common hearing complaint where you hear a buzzing or ringing in your ears on a near-constant basis. Imagine hearing your fire alarm going off constantly in the background for weeks or months at a time - this should give you some insight into what tinnitus is really like. Often, the cause of tinnitus is your hearing being exposed to overly loud noises, such as drilling, explosions or very loud music.

However, if you opt to wear ear protection while being exposed to these kinds of sounds, you can make developing tinnitus much less likely. When you hear a loud sound, it can cause damage to your inner ear, which is what causes the ringing or buzzing sound that tinnitus continually causes.

3. You Can’t Fix Damaged Hearing

Once your hearing has been damaged, it can’t be fixed. Our eardrums and ears don’t heal themselves, which means that if you damage your hearing by not wearing adequate ear protection, there’s no going back. You can, of course, have a hearing aid fitted, but even a hearing aid is not guaranteed to restore your hearing to its former glory.

Once you have damaged your hearing, there is no going back - it’s gone for good, which is why it’s so important that you make sure to look after your ears and always wear adequate hearing protection when required. You will only regret it if you don’t, so make sure that whenever you are exposed to loud noises that you wear earmuffs that offer the perfect level of hearing protection by blocking out loud sounds.

You wouldn’t drive your car without wearing your seatbelt, would you? Why? Because you know that if you are involved in an accident, your seatbelt is what will save your life. It’s the same with wearing earmuffs to protect your hearing - if you want to keep this precious sense safe, you need to take steps to protect it.
